Botany
Argan trees (botanical name - Argania Spinosa) are grown in North Africa and particularly in Algeria and the Sous valley of southwestern Morocco. They grow to 8-10 meters high and have a lifespan of 200 years. Argan tree is quite adapted to drought, and it grows in the area of wild semi-desert soil. It has thorny trunks, a wide-spreading crown, and branches leaning towards the ground.
The argan tree bears oval-shaped, small leaves, yellow-green flowers, and pulpy fruits with thick, bitter peels and unpleasant flavor. The pulp surrounds a hard nut that typically contains one seed. The ripening of fruit takes a year. The cultivators harvest the fruits in July every year. Argan trees are the source of fodder, oil, timber, and fuel for the local people.
UNESCO and the government are working towards the conservation of argan trees in Morocco. The thriving export market for argan oil encourages the cultivation of these trees. This oil is considered one of the rarest oils, and that is because it grows only in a small part of the world.
An Overview of Argan (extra virgin) Carrier Oil
When argan fruits are black and dry, they naturally fall from the trees. The goats eat them while leaving nuts which are then collected by argan carrier oil manufacturers to derive oil. They extract seeds by using stones. Afterward, they use a cold-press method to derive oil from the seeds.
Argan (extra virgin) oil contains 80% unsaturated fatty acids and does not oxidize rapidly. The oil contains a higher amount of oleic acid (omega 6) compared to virgin argan oil that finds wide use as a cooking oil. European cosmetic manufacturers prefer unroasted, extra virgin argan seed oil as an ingredient in their skincare products.
